Spring is just around the corner! Since it is still the beginning of March, we were all pleasantly surprised to find what this touch of warm weather brought our little Bryarton Farm.
Our chickens are now 8 months old and feeling productive in this weekend’s 50° weather. Cami Grace was so excited to reach into the nests and find three gorgeous blue-green eggs. She loved counting “one, two, twee” as she gently held her treasures. She couldn’t wait to show her “tickens” what she had found in their house.
Lizzy, Mary, Lidia, Georgiana and famed rooster Mr. Darcy are Araucanas or “Easter Eggers”. This breed of chicken is as colorful in their feathers as they are in their blue-green eggs. Our fluffy white rooster Mr. Bingley and his hens Maggie, Jane, Emma, Kitty, Elenore, and Fanny are of the Cochin variety. They have yet to lay their beautiful brown eggs.
The only downside to having such colorful eggs would be that this Easter we won’t really be able to dye our farm’s eggs. When I was a little girl I remember trying to dye the colored eggs from my family’s farm. It was so frustrating to dip a brown egg into the purple and then pull out a sickly blackish egg. When I put a blue egg into the orange I got a gross brownish color.
I guess God is in charge of decorating our eggs this year and I kinda like it that way!

I’m so glad Cami got over her fear and can enjoy them now. She is so cute in her farm boots and pig tails. Give her hugs and kisses from all of us. Look forward to seeing ya’ll in June.
aww, she is so cute! and what awesome chickens and eggs:) i have a question for you. My parents in russia had always grown up with chickens and fresh eggs. So, I developed an interest in harvesting our own eggs as well, and steve isn’t on board yet:) Is the cost to set up the coop, purchase chickens, etc worth the number of eggs you’re getting. I guess its a silly question, but with how cold ohio winters are, my hubby doesn’t want to heat the coop lol. What kind of set-up do you have, heated coop? # of egg layers, is it a good idea for me to start even though ive never done anything like it before?
Olya, I would definitely recommend raising chickens for so many reasons. They are easy to care for, are great bug killers, provide eggs, endless entertainment and make sweet pets ect. We do not heat our hen house and simply fixed up an old coop that was already on our farm so we have not spent anything on their coop. I would recommend getting chicks now since they are being sold in most farm stores in the spring. We had a late start and spent a lot on shipping our chicks to our farm. We have ten hens and two roosters,since our hens are very young and it is still a bit cold out we only get two eggs a day right now. Once the weather warms up they will lay at least twice that. If you did heat your coop they would lay year around, but that was not important to us. I hope this answers all your Q’s.
