The beauty of country life is effortless; decorating your porch for fall should be too. I want to share simple ideas for letting God’s breathtaking creation inspire beauty for your home. You don’t have to spend any money. It’s all about using natural elements you already have to create farmhouse-style charm.

As you might know, the Wild Sunflower is our Kansas state flower. They grow thickly along the country roads and in the pastures. So the girls and I have been gathering them during our walks, creating beautiful bouquets to grace our farm table.

From the centerpiece to the meal itself, we are beginning to taste the fruits of our labor in farm-to-table style!

This year we decided to add some wild sunflowers to our garden, planting them alongside our tomatoes, corn, and other flowers.

We were quite surprised and delighted at how well these wildflowers flourished in our beds!

With the farmhouse still all covered in scaffolding and the exterior restoration in full swing, the bright yellow blooms were a welcome distraction. Though it feels a bit like “lipstick on a pig” I hope that the giant happy flowers make our home look a little more inviting…

I freshened last year’s fall wreaths by adding chicken tail feathers I found in the coop and wild flower bouquets. So much of our budget goes to boring tools or supplies for our restoration work, that it was fun to come up with cute fall decor that didn’t cost a thing! The girls were ever ready to help with both the gardening and the decorating.

These lil’ farm girls seem to always have a flower in hand…

…and the sunflowers have lived up to their name bringing sunshine into our lives.

Juggling our regular jobs, homeschooling, art commissions, farm animals, teaching Sunday school, family time, and this DIY farm restoration has been at times overwhelming. Here is what our porch looked like last fall:

YIKES! We have come a long way, but we still have so much left to do! I see the wild sunflowers adorning our half-finished home as a reminder to stop and appreciate the effortless beauty of the countryside that surrounds me. I can’t get too caught up in the craziness of this DIY restoration project! I am, “too blessed to be stressed.”

My country garden helps to dispel my worry, bringing these verses to mind – Matthew 6:27-29 “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan? And why do you worry about clothes [or anything else]? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin. Yet, I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.…”

—Meaning God’s in complete control of EVERYTHING… I know He will carry us through this season and any hardships that may come our way. I hope that is encouraging news to you too!

Here is a little Video we created for our YouTube Channel sharing how we harvested, grew, and enjoyed our wild country sunflowers:
